A very well written and interesting account of Tanner's military service. He tells of his being accepted into the Naval Aviation Cadet training program, his training, combat, and time spent missing in action in the Philippines. After training in several different locations Tanner was eventually assigned to Fighting Squadron 4, the "Red Rippers" in Ayer, Massachusetts. They were eventually given orders to move to the Pacific Ocean to fight in that theater of the war. On his first combat mission, Tanner was shot down over Luzon and spent over two months evading the Japanese with the help of Filipino natives and soldiers in the area who were resisting the Japanese. Filled with photographs, letters, and telegrams, Tanner's story is detailed and very well told, including references to how his faith helped him during this time. He also speaks often of his then fianceĢ, Kathie, and the relationship they shared as he served his country, an aspect of military service common to many men.
